The Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the NWTF and the Restoration of the Wild Turkey in Minnesota!
The Restoration of the Wild Turkey in Minnesota stands as a remarkable Conservation Success Story. From the initial release of turkeys in Houston County during the winter of 1972-1973 to their widespread presence across three-quarters of Minnesota's landscape today, this achievement is a testament to 50 years of dedicated effort.
The Minnesota Chapter played a pivotal role in securing funds for turkey trappers and even garnered legislative support, resulting in a dedicated account established by the Minnesota Legislature in 1996. This fund directly contributed to the Trap and Transplant Program, vital in expanding the wild turkey population.
On July 22nd, 2023, in Caledonia MN, the Wild Turkey Capital of Minnesota, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the NWTF and the triumphant Restoration of the Wild Turkey in the North Star State. The culmination of decades of hard work was immortalized with the dedication of three bronze plaques at North Park, commemorating the partnership between NWTF and the Minnesota DNR.
The day was filled with appreciation, including heartfelt speeches from prominent conservationists, dedication of plaques honoring major donors, and a warm social event to share stories and relish in the accomplishment of relocating over 5,000 wild turkeys to new habitats. The event wrapped up with a fundraising banquet, securing the next chapter of successful conservation efforts.
